Jose Hermoza

Professor Jose Hermoza is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitors and instructors in the New England region. A 2nd-degree Black Belt with over 20 years of BJJ experience, he is respected for his technical mastery, championship résumé, and leadership on and off the mats.

 
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Professor Hermoza began his martial arts journey practicing Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, and gymnastics before discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After moving to the United States, he began training under Professor Daniel Gazzoni, a 5th-degree Black Belt, at Brazilian Top Team (BTT) Boston. Under Gazzoni’s guidance, he built a strong foundation that shaped his success as both a competitor and coach.

Professor Hermoza’s competitive accomplishments include:

IBJJF World No-Gi Champion 
4x IBJJF No-Gi Pan American Champion 
5x IBJJF Boston Open Champion, earning titles at every belt rank 
2x European Champion in Rome, Italy 
Medalist in over 65 IBJJF competitions worldwide 

Professor Hermoza also brings exceptional academic achievement to his leadership. He earned his Associate Degree in Sport Management with Honors from Bunker Hill Community College before transferring to the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Leadership & Administration. During his studies, he was a multi-semester Dean’s List honoree and earned the prestigious Senior MVP Award within the Sport Leadership & Administration program. 

Today, as the Co-Founder and Head Coach of Brazilian Top Team Westford, Professor Hermoza brings world-class instruction, a passion for teaching, and a deep commitment to helping students grow both on and off the mats.
